The Egyptian striker Mido is seeking legal advice to learn whether he can return to his boyhood club in the ongoing January transfer window, despite applying for British citizenship.
“I’m applying for the English passport but I don’t know if I can leave England and return to Egypt now,” Mido, who is without a club after terminating his contract with Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam, said in a television interview.
“My lawyers will tell me as soon as possible whether I can leave England. Their response will determine if I can join Zamalek or not.”
Zamalek are keen on signing the 27-year-old to strengthen their frontline, given the consistent absence of Amr Zaki due to injury and the inability of Ahmed Gaafar and Ivorian Abou Kone to live up to expectations.
Mido is currently training with English second division side Middlesbrough, whom he left in the close of season to join Ajax.
“I have been training with Middlesbrough for two days. They offered me the chance to stay with them until the end of the season,” he added.
