Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has expressed support for the expansion of investment by Italy’s Eni in the oil exploration and production fields, his spokesman Bassam Rady said in a statement following a meeting with the CEO of the Italian company, Claudio Descalzi, in Cairo on Sunday.

The president urged continued cooperation with the company and the surmounting of any obstacles facing its operations, praising what he called the firm’s punctual commitment to implementing its projects.

The meeting, which was attended by the Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Petroleum Minister Tarek El-Molla, and a number of Eni officials, was held to follow up on the company’s exploration and production activities in Egypt, according to the statement.

Descalzi voiced appreciation for Egypt’s “supportive” stance toward Italy during the coronavirus pandemic, as well as lauding the precautions Egypt has adopted at energy sites.

He added that the company is looking forward to continuing development of its activities in Egypt, particularly in the western region and in the Red Sea.
