Alexandria's Palm Beach witnessed another tragic incident as three beachgoers drowned after they had accessed the closed beach on Sunday night.

Lifeguards retrieved the bodies of 21-year-old Amr Abdel-Gawad from Cairo, 15-year-old Abdel-Wahab Ahmed from Daqahaliya governorate, and an unidentified body.

The prosecution is investigating the incident.

In July, 11 people drowned at Palm Beach two weeks after four people had drowned in the neighbouring Al-Safa beach.

Palm beach has been closed since 2018 due to repeated incidents of drowning attributed to strong sea currents and whirlpools.

Beachgoers from economically humble classes sneak to Palm beach to enjoy the sea for free, according to locals.

Egypt's public beaches have been closed since Mid-March to prevent overcrowding and curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
