Egypt's defensive midfielder Sam Morsy joined English Championship side Middlesbrough from Wigan Athletic after impressing with his club last season.

Middlesbrough said on their official website that Morsy had penned a three-year-deal with the club.

"Morsy, who was attracting interest from a number of clubs, will add further competition for places and bring added experience as Boro boss Neil Warnock looks to mould his squad for the new season," the club added.

Although Wigan were relegated from the Championship last season, Morsy's form saw him named the club's Player of the Year.

The English-born 29-year-old, who also played for Port Vale, Chesterfield and Barnsley, has earned seven caps with Egypt since making his debut in August 2016.

He has fallen out of favour in the past couple of years though, with his last appearance coming in a 2-0 win over Swaziland in an African Cup of Nations qualifier in 2018.

Morsy was also part of Egypt's squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, featuring in the opening 1-0 defeat by Uruguay.
