Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel-Aal has issued a decree allowing elderly people over the age of 70 to use public transportation for free in the governorate, a statement by Cairo governorate said on Saturday.
The statement added that commuters aged 60 to 70 years old can use public transport at a 50 percent discount in Cairo.
Elderly commuters can ride for free or use the discount by presenting a valid national ID to the conductor, the statement noted.
The governor said the decision aims to alleviate burdens on the elderly in gratitude for their service to the nation in various fields.
