Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said on Tuesday that the “courageous men” of the Armed Forces are determined to continue protecting the nation’s territory and preserving the dignity of the people.

In a Facebook post after a televised speech on the 47th anniversary of the October 1973 war against Israel, El-Sisi said the bond between the army and people can never be broken.

“On the anniversary of the great October victory, I pay homage to the martyrs and heroes of the Armed Forces for leaving to us a free homeland that is under national sovereignty and does not accept submission or degradation” El-Sisi said.

“I use this occasion to affirm that the Armed Forces and its brave men are determined to carry on the path, protect the territory and preserve the dignity of the people, which is tied to its national army via a covenant, a pledge and a bond that can never be broken.”

The Arab-Israeli War, known in Egypt as the 6 October War, was fought by a coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria against Israel.

The war eventually led to Israeli forces withdrawing from the Sinai Peninsula on 25 April 1982 after 15 years of occupation, based on a peace treaty signed between Egypt and Israel in 1979.

El-Sisi in his televised speech earlier on Tuesday said "the great victory taught us that the Egyptian nation is always able to stand up for its rights and earn considerable respect from others."

"The glorious October war was not just a military battle in which Egypt fought and achieved its greatest victory; it was a real test of the Egyptian people's ability to make the dream come true,” the president added.
