Wydad coach blames fixture congestion for Ahly defeat in Champions League

Miguel Gamondi believes Wydad players were exhausted due to fixture pile-up in the league, which they lost to Raja on the final matchday last Sunday

Wydad Casablanca coach Miguel Gamondi has blamed fatigue and injuries for his team's 2-0 defeat by Ahly in the first leg of the CAF Champions League semi-final on Saturday.

"I am very disappointed with the result. We came to the semi-final exhausted after playing a lot of games recently, coming out of a lot of stress and missing several key players due to injury," the Argentinean tactician said after the game.

Wydad lost the Moroccan league title last Sunday on the final matchday to Casablanca rivals Raja.

They missed key players against Ahly, such as midfielder Salaheddine Saidi, and had to keep versatile defender Cheikh Comara on the bench as wasn't fully fit for the game.

"I had very limited choices and I had to deploy some players in some unusual positions. We made an early mistake that cost us heavily but we played quite well in the first half and then we missed a penalty kick that could have changed the course of the game," Gamondi added.

Badie Aouk's spot kick was blocked by Ahly's keeper just before the break while the result was still 1-0, before Ahly went on to double the lead in the second half.

"We won't throw in the towel and we will go to Cairo to fight and the players must show that they belong to a big club like Wydad," Gamondi concluded.

Wydad will fly to Egypt to play the return leg on Friday at Cairo Stadium.
