Egypt has welcomed the understandings reached between Sudan and the United States with regards to embarking procedures for lifting Khartoum from the State Sponsors of Terrorism list, a statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry read on Tuesday.

The statement came one day after President Donald Trump said the move would take place once Khartoum sets aside $335 million in compensation for American victims.

According to Reuters, the Central Bank of Sudan said on Tuesday it transferred the compensation Sudan has agreed to pay to the US victims of terror attacks and their families,

The Egyptian statement offered congratulations to the Sudanese people and authorities, adding that Cairo hopes years-long period of isolation and political and economic suffering endured by Khartoum comes to end.

The statement stressed Egypt is confident that the move would usher in a new era of progress and prosperity for Sudan and that it would bring it back to its effective and deserved role in the Arab and African arenas.

Washington had included Khartoum on its list of state sponsors of terrorism ever since 1993 on charges of collaborating with Islamic extremist groups.
