The anticipated Netflix show 'Paranormal', that follows the adventures of the 80s-90s Arab youth readers' favorite hero Dr. Refaat Ismail, will see its premiere on Thursday.
The new series' main character is portrayed by popular comedian Ahmed Amin and is the first Netflix Arabic Original series from Egypt.
It is based on the best selling thriller novel series by Dr. Ahmed Khalid Tawfik, and will be available in 190 countries around the world in over 32 languages and will be dubbed into 9 different languages in addition to audio and written descriptions for disabled individuals.
Drum-rolling posts with comments, memories and comics are circulating social media in Egypt even weeks before the release, with comic drawing initiatives for the scenes and characters being formed as well.
A dream come true for acclaimed Egyptian writer Amr Salama, who wrote the screenplay and directed the show alongside Majid Al-Ansari. It will also star Razane Jammal and Aya Samaha.
"Refaat Ismail’s journey of doubt will be presented in a series of six episodes, each centered around one of the famous urban legends in the 'Paranormal' books. Every episode is a standalone story, but all are interconnected through something common, a recurring element in the first season: The Khadrawy House," stated Netflix.
The series is produced by Mohamed Hefzy and Salama, and was filmed in Egypt, with staff writers also including Mahmoud Ezzat, Dina Maher and Omar Khaled.
The high-profile duo Salama and Hefzy last collaborated in 2017 on the award-winning movie 'Sheikh Jackson', currently also available on Netflix.
The crew also includes Ahmed ‘Shiko’ Beshary, Ahmed Hafez (director of photography), Ali Hossam (production designer), Dina Nadeem (costume designer), Andrew Mckenzie (stunt coordinator) with music created by Khaled Kamar and VFX by AROMA.
Amin has in recent years proved his acting skills, gaining fame with the TV show 'Al-Plateau' and starring in a few successful series including ‘Al-Wassiya' in addition to his theatre project 'Amin and Partners'.
Having dubbed the Godfather for the 90s young readers, Ahmed Khalid Tawfik, is one of the earliest Egyptian writers to specialise in horror, science fiction and fantasy with his work including both illustrated books and novels like the 2008 novel Utopia that was a great hit and a continuation of the success that his metaphysics series achieved.
