The interim Coptic Pope, Bishop Bakhomious, confirmed in a press conference on Saturday that the church has no preferred presidential candidate, stressing that every Copt has the right to freely choose their preferred candidate.
Bakhomious criticised in his speech media sites which claimed there was a conflict within the church as to which candidate it will back, adding that the church's lawyers will be following up on such reports.
Commenting on the constitution to be drafted, Bakhomious stated the church wants a "civil" constitution, which upholds the equal right to citizenship, meaning equality for members of all religions. Democracy, the patriarch continued, should not mean the majority dictates, but should mean that all individuals have an equal say in the country.
