Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi arrived in Athens on Tuesday evening to discuss bilateral ties with Greek officials, the Egyptian presidency said.
El-Sisi will meet with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis as well as Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou to discuss various regional and international issues of common interest including the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and efforts to counter terrorism and extremist thought.
The Egyptian president will also meet with the Greek energy and environment minister to discuss the economic ties and cooperation in the energy sector as well as economic exchange and investment opportunities in Egypt, especially in the country’s mega-projects.
Last month, El-Sisi met with Greek PM Mitsotakis and Cypriot President Anastasiades in Nicosia, Cyprus in a trilateral summit where they agreed on the necessity of “combating escalation policies aimed at shaking the region’s stability.”
Two months ago, Egypt and Greece ratified a maritime demarcation deal to establish an exclusive economic zone (EZZ) between the two countries after three years of negotiations.
Turkey has expressed its rejection of the Egyptian-Greek maritime demarcation deal, claiming it infringes on Turkey’s demarcation deal with Libya’s Government of National Accord.
Tensions were already high between Greece and Turkey over the exploration of energy resources in the Eastern Mediterranean.
