Kuwait's foreign minister Sheikh Ahmed Al-Nasser Al-Sabah expressed his country's support for Egypt’s stance over the disputed Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) under construction on the Blue Nile since 2011.

"The Kuwaiti position is supportive of brotherly Egypt, especially concerning its national security," Al-Sabah told reporters on Monday during his visit to the Palestinian Embassy in Kuwait to express condolences over the death of senior Palestinian peace negotiator Saeb Erekat.

In his remarks reported by the Egyptian state-run news agency MENA, Al-Sabah said discussions with Egypt are diversified and are not only limited to this issue.

Cairo and Khartoum have been in talks with Addis Ababa for years now to reach a legally binding agreement on the filling and operation of the massive hydropower dam, which is of concern to both downstream countries.

The Kuwaiti statements were made a few hours after Egyptian foreign minister Sameh Shoukry concluded his three-day visit to the Gulf country, during which he met with Kuwaiti Crown Prince Sheikh Mishaal Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah, Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, and his Kuwaiti counterpart.

Shoukry delivered a message from President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi to Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah, where he invited the Kuwaiti emir to visit Egypt.

Shoukry said Kuwait has backed Egypt’s right to water security as part of the Arab national security.

He affirmed that the Kuwaiti leadership has always backed the Egyptian stance, which sought to persuade Ethiopian partners of the need to reach an agreement to preserve the water security of both Egypt and Sudan, reported MENA.
