Egyptian police arrested on Sunday 15 people involved in filming and posting on social media two videos where they mocked Zamalek football player Mahmoud "Shikabala" Abdel-Razek following Ahly's 2-1 triumph against their Cairo rivals Zamalek on Friday in the African Champions League final.
Police arrested 11 people in Itay Al-Barud village in Beheira governorate for uploading a video to social media showing them holding a mock funeral for the 34-year-old player following’s Zamalek’s loss.
Police also arrested four people in Luxor governorate for filming and uploading on social media platforms another video, which many deemed racist, showing a black dog wearing a Zamalek t-shirt and being compared to Shikabala, who is dark-skinned.
The statement added that the Ministry of Interior is also pursuing a number of people who are allegedly responsible for uploading photos insulting Ahly club and its players.
A number of sports stars and actors have publicly expressed their support for Shikabala and condemned the bullying against him on social media.
Ahly chairman and iconic Egypt forward Mahmoud El-Khattib condemned all forms of abuse towards any player in a statement issued on Sunday.
