US Senator Ted Cruz announced on Wednesday that he, along with other senators, reintroduced legislation this week that will classify the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation in the United States.

It is not the first time for Cruz to try to introduce this bill. In 2019, he said that he was “planning to introduce enhanced legislation to designate the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organisation in the short future."

Earlier in 2017, Cruz sponsored legislation that would require the White House to decide whether the Brotherhood fit the criteria for a terrorist designation.

“I am proud to reintroduce this bill and to advance America’s fight against radical Islamic terrorism,” the republican senator said in a statement published on his official website.

“I commend the current administration’s work in calling terrorism by its name and combatting the spread of this potent threat,” he said, adding that he was looking forward to receiving the additional information this new bill requests from the department of state.

“Many of our closest allies in the Arab world have long ago concluded that the Muslim Brotherhood is a terrorist group that seeks to sow chaos across the Middle East, and I will continue working with my colleagues to take action against groups that finance terrorism,” he added.

Egypt designated the Brotherhood a terrorist organisation in 2013, months after the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi following mass protests. Saudi Arabia and the UAE followed the same steps in 2020.

“Since the founding of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Brotherhood affiliated groups have consistently preached and incited hatred against Christians, Jews, and other Muslims while supporting designated radical terrorists,” republican U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe was quoted in Cruz’ Wednesday statement.

“We must continue to condemn foreign terrorist organisations and hold them accountable for the evil they perpetrate,” Inhofe added.
