Handball: Japan's team first to arrive in Cairo to take part in World Championship, Egypt 2021

Egypt are scheduled to host the World Championship from 13 to 31 January 2021 with 32 teams participating for the first time in the tournament's history

Japan's senior handball national team arrived in Cairo airport early on Sunday to take part in the 27th International Handball Federation’s (IHF) Men’s World Championship, Egypt 2021, with strict precautionary measures in place.

Egypt are scheduled to host the World Championship from 13 to 31 January 2021 with 32 teams participating for the first time in the tournament's history.

The Japanese team is the first participant in the tournament to arrive in Egypt, as they will play two friendlies against hosts Egypt on 5 and 7 January, according to the tournament's official website.

"The system we are applying during the tournament ensures the best conditions of isolation and quarantine," head of the Accommodation and Logistics Commission Mamdouh El-Sheshtawy was quoted as saying on the tournament's official website.

Japan are in Group C of the Men’s World Championship, alongside Croatia, Qatar, and Angola, as they will play their games in Borg Al-Arab Sports Hall, Alexandria.

The Samurai Warriors booked their place in the World Championship after coming in third at the 2020 Asian Handball Federation’s Asian Men’s Championship.

Japan made 14 appearances in World Championships over the years, with their best appearance being in 1970, when they finished the tournament in 10th place.
