Egypt has started issuing EGP 1 million in coins per day - EGP 30 million per month - across the country to meet public demand and combat change shortages, the finance ministry announced on Tuesday.

The ministry said in a statement that the new dispersal of coins meets the needs of governmental bodies, the private sector, commercial chains and stores, in addition to making it easier for citizens in regards to their daily buying and selling operations.

Minister of Finance Mohamed Maait gave directives to sustain the provision of coins in order to avoid any kind of change shortages, especially during feast days, holidays, and rush hours.

The Head of Public Treasury Authority (PTA) Hosam Khedr said that new dispersal centre will be established in the PTA building in the Darrasa district in Cairo to provide change and coins for citizens.

Coins are available in categories of EGP 1, 25 and 50 piastres.
