Ahly skipper Mohamed El-Shennawi praised his teammates for the commitment they displayed and the high quality of their football during their loss against Bayern Munich in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Ahly lost 2-0 against the European champions Bayern Munich, where Robert Lewandowski scored both goals.

However, the Reds' goalie El-Shennawi played a good game and cleared many critical chances from the best forwards in Europe, most notably Lewandowski, the 2020 FIFA best player of the year.

“I want to tell my mates that you played like real men and followed the manager’s instructions. Despite facing the European champion, we were very confident that we had world class players who can perform at the top level, which we already did,” El-Shennawi said in the post-game interview.

“We played a big game against Bayern Munich, and congratulations to them for reaching the final, it was an important game for us to gain more experience and to prove that we are not far from that level,” he added.

After losing in the semifinal, the African champions are scheduled to face the Copa Libertadores winners Palmeiras of Brazil on Thursday in the 3rd place match.

“We will forget about today’s game and will concentrate on the next game, which won’t be easy, as the opponent has watched us and observed our strengths and weak points; however, we will play with confidence to clinch 3rd place,” El-Shennawi stressed.

Palmeiras lost in the semifinal to Mexico’s Tigres, who wrote history by qualifying to the final, as this is the first time in history that a team from North America has reached this stage.
