The International Society for Quality in Healthcare (ISQUA) granted Egypt’s hospitals international accreditation, a statement by Egypt’s General Authority for Health Accreditation and Supervision (GAHAS) read on Thursday.

The country’s accreditation by ISQUA, as a leading neutral international quality assurance body, is testament that the Egyptian hospitals comply with the standards of the international authority and follow the highest international standards and specifications applied worldwide.

GAHAS, the national authority that controls and regulates the health sector, will announce the accreditation at a press conference in the presence of the ISQUA representative in Egypt on Thursday.

At the conference, Egypt will receive an official certificate and the country’s efforts will be reviewed, said Ashraf Ismail, head of GAHAS.

In late January, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi ordered the completion of the country's Universal Health Insurance System (UHIS) nationwide in 10 years instead of the previously scheduled 15-years.

The UHIS is anticipated to be one of the tools to reform the healthcare sector in Egypt.

It was launched in Port Said in early 2018 and will include six phases.

The healthcare system targets serving the citizens with the lowest income in the country’s 27 governorates.
