Egypt’s U-23 Coach Shawky Gharib announced Saturday that he has included Liverpool Winger Mohamed Salah in the young Pharaohs’ preliminary squad for the 2021 Olympic Games but he is waiting for the final decision from the player and his club.
The Olympics' regulations for football tournaments state that each team is allowed to include three over-age players, while the rest of the players must be under 23 years of age.
"I included 10 over-age players in the preliminary squad to choose from them in the final list," Gharib told a television programme.
"It is not only up to us to decide Salah's situation in joining the Olympic team as we just called him and are waiting for his decision along with his club because there should be an agreement between all parties," the Olympic team's coach added.
The 28-year-old, has performed superbly since joining Liverpool in the 2017 season, achieving great results with the Reds, as well as helping the team win two long-elusive titles: The Champions League in the 2018-2019 season and the Premier League in the 2019-2020 season.
Last year, Gharib revealed that Liverpool Coach Jurgen Klopp has requested from Egypt's U-23 national team a comprehensive file on the team's program that he can study before deciding on whether to let Mohamed Salah participate in the Olympics or not.
The young pharaohs booked their place at the Olympic Games after winning the U-23 Nations Cup on home soil in the November of last year.
