Incumbent head of the Journalists Syndicate Diaa Rashwan won another term after amassing 1,965 votes in the midterm elections held on Friday.

Refaat Rashad came in second with 1,506 votes, followed by Karem Yehia, Sayed El-Eskandarany, Talaat Hisham, and Mohamed Maghraby.

Mohamed Khoraga, Ibrahim Abu Kaila, Hussein Zanaty, Ayman Abdel-Maguid, Mohamed Saad, and Doaa El-Naggar were elected as board members.

Rashwan, 61, is serving as the syndicate’s head for the third time and chairs the State Information Service. He previously presided over Al-Ahram Centre for Political and Strategic Studies.

Rashwan earned his bachelor’s degree in political science in Cairo University and his Master’s degree from the Paris-based Sorbonne University.

The poll, adjourned from March, owing to coronavirus concerns, was held in a spacious, open-air venue at the Teachers Club in Cairo’s El-Gezira district.

The vote was initially scheduled for 19 March before the government had rejected the syndicate's proposal to hold the elections in tents erected outside the syndicate's headquarters in Downtown Cairo.
