Eleven people were killed and 98 others injured on Sunday when four carriages of a train on the Cairo-Mansoura line derailed on Sunday afternoon near Toukh city in Qalioubya, the health ministry reported.
According to the latest reports on the incident released by the Health Ministry, 14 people have already been released from the hospital after receiving treatment.
Four carriages of a train on the Cairo-Mansoura line derailed on Sunday at 13:45 PM near Toukh city in Qalioubiya in the Nile Delta, Egypt’s National Railways Authority announced.
According to the authority, the train’s 4 carriages derailed at the entrance of the Sandahur station near Toukh city.
The Railways Authority stated that it was currently investigating the accident to determine its cause; the train driver and his assistant, as well as 8 other officials in the train station, have been detained by security forces pending investigation.
The prosecution also announced that it started an investigation into the accident.
The Health ministry announced that it dispatched 58 ambulances to transfer the injured to three hospitals in the area.
Minister of Health Hala Zayed visited the hospitals on Sunday, according to the ministry.
Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi ordered Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly to form a committee to disclose the circumstances behind the incident.
The committee will include the membership of the Administrative Control Authority (ACA), the Armed Forces Engineering Authority, the Military Technical College, and engineering faculties, a cabinet statement read.
Madbouly said the ministers of health and higher education were assigned to inspect the hospitals where the injured citizens were moved to.
Minister of Social Solidarity Nevine El-Qabbaj was also assigned to accelerate the procedures to pay compensation for the harmed citizens, the premier said.
Minister of Transport Kamel El-Wazir arrived at the scene of the accident.
