Egypt reported 850 new coronavirus cases on Sunday bringing the total infection tally to 216,334 since the outbreak began in February.

The health ministry also reported 44 new deaths, bringing the total number of deaths from the virus to 12,738.

The statement said that 765 patients have been discharged after recovering from the virus, bringing the total number of recoveries to 163,479.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on Sunday gave directives to allocate any additional financial sources needed to import the needed vaccines and also cooperate with foreign parties to produce the vaccines locally.

Egypt has started its vaccination campaign in January starting with medical workers and then started to vaccinate the elderly and people suffering from chronic diseases. The vaccines provided in the country so far are Sinopharm and AstraZeneca.

In mid-April, head of the preventive healthcare sector at the health ministry said 320,000 Egyptians have been vaccinated against coronavirus as part of the national campaign.
