Egypt’s Minister of Irrigation Mohamed Abdel-Ati discussed on Thursday the latest developments regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) with South Sudanese officials in Juba, the Egyptian irrigation ministry announced.
According to the Egyptian irrigation ministry, Abdel-Ati discussed the latest developments concerning the GERD and stressed that Egypt is keen to reach to a legally binding agreement that meets the development needs of all countries involved.
The Egyptian irrigation minister, South Sudanese Vice President James Wani and Minister of Presidential Affairs Barnaba Marial also discussed boosting cooperation between Egypt and South Sudan in water management.
Minister Abdel-Ati arrived in Juba with a delegation from the irrigation ministry.
Talks between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia over the operation of the GERD and the filling of its reservoir reached a deadlock in April, with Addis Ababa insisting on moving forward with the second filling next month with or without an agreement.
Sudan has said that if Ethiopia goes ahead with the second filling unilaterally, the lives and safety of millions of Sudanese citizens will be in danger.
