Egypt's FM discusses GERD developments with Sudanese counterpart, Arab committee in New York

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met in New York on Friday with his Sudanese counterpart Mariam al-Sadiq al-Mahdy and the Arab committee coordinating on the latest developments regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) with the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the Egyptian foreign ministry said.

The meeting came a day after the UNSC held a session on the GERD at the request by Egypt and Sudan in a bid to solve the dam crisis with Ethiopia.

Both Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdy and Shoukry were in New York in the past five days preparing for the session on that was held on Thursday as well as discussing the latest developments in the GERD dispute with members of the UNSC and the UN officials.

During the UNSC session, a draft resolution was presented calling for the resumption of the GERD talks between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia within the frame time of six months under the auspices of the African Union and for suspending the second filing of the dam immediately.

The Arab committee includes Jordan, Morocco, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia, as well as the Arab League.
