Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi praised the Egyptian handball team who finished fourth in the Tokyo Olympics after failing to secure the bronze medal following a heartbreaking 31-33 loss to Spain earlier today.

"My sons, Egypt's youth, the champions of the national handball team: I am proud of you and your outstanding performance. I pay tribute to the team's competitive spirit and high morals during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics," El-Sisi posted on his Facebook page.

"I assure you that your precious country is waiting for more determination, challenge, and effort from you to continue the march for championships and achievements and raise the flag of the nation in international forums,” he added.

In losing to the Spaniards, the Pharaohs lost the opportunity to clinch the country's first-ever Olympic medal in a team sport.

Egypt's handball team made it to the last four for the first time in their history in the Olympics after securing an impressive 31-26 victory over Germany in the quarter-final on Tuesday.

The team lost 23-27 to France in the semifinals after a convincing show on Thursday.
