French tactician Patrice Carteron believes Zamalek remarkable finish of the season is behind the team’s triumph in the league.

“I am very happy for our supporters and for the club. It’s a great honour to win the league title in Egypt. We made a remarkable finish winning 8 consecutive matches. We finished strong,” Carteron said after the game.

Zamalek have been crowned league champions for the time since 2015 dethroning reigning champions Ahly.

The team had an impressive 22-game unbeaten run including an 8-game winning streak that helped them open a 6-point gap with Ahly.

“It’s a very special saison for me, especially that the board put its confidence in me after returning back. We managed to stabilise the team, improve and overcome our rival,” he added.

The 51-year old tactician, who is enjoying his third league title throughout his managerial career after a double with Congolese side TP Mazembe in 2013 and 2014, has acknowledged it was a very tight race but the team spirit was a key factor in the recent form.

“The players were strong mentally and we gained a boost in confidence especially after winning deep in injury time against Talae El-Gaish and Masry. But we were also very strong physically and always had the upper hand against our opponents in the second half,” Carteron explained.

The former Mali, Ahly and Raja Casablanca coach says he will stay at Zamalek and will start discussing with the board the plans for the new season.

He praised the quality in his squad and said that players like Mostafa Fathi, Mohamed Ounajem, Omar El Said and Karim Bambou would add more depth to his team when they return from their loan spells.
