FM Shoukry stresses Egypt's constant support to UNRWA's role

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry reiterated Egypt's constant keenness on supporting the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and the important role the agency is playing in backing the Palestinian refugees.

Shoukry's remarks to the effect came during talks with UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini at the Foreign Ministry's HQ on Wednesday.

Shoukry said he is looking forward to maintaining cooperation with the UNRWA in order to alleviate suffering of the refugees, with special focus on regional challenges and ongoing COVID-19 impacts, said Spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Hafez.

The Egyptian foreign minister added it is important to guarantee the agency will continue taking its humanitarian and relief responsibilities, added Hafez.

Shoukry appreciated the role the UNRWA is playing in promoting stability in the Middle East region, pointing to the Egyptian efforts being exerted to back the Palestinian people, according to the spokesperson.

Shoukry said the international community should play its role in handling the challenges facing the Palestinians, said Hafez.

In turn, Lazzarini commended the role played by Egypt and the country's strenuous efforts to back the agency and the Palestinian refugees.

He posted Shoukry on the latest developments pertaining to the UNRWA's mission.

Lazzarini said he is looking forward to maintaining coordination and consultation with the Egypt in order to achieve the agency's goals on the ground.
