Sudanese authorities have contained a coup attempt and the situation has been brought under control, a member of the country's ruling council said on Tuesday.

"There has been a failed coup attempt, the people should confront it," state media reported on Tuesday.

Interrogation of the suspects involved in the attempted coup is set to take place on Monday and the military will issue a statement shortly, spokesman of the country's ruling council Mohamed Al-Faki Suleiman said.

Wagdi Saleh, a member of the committee for the removal of the former regime, told Ahram Online from the capital Khartoum that the plotters were detained in the "early hours of the coup" after they "failed to take control of the TV and radio building in Omdurman."

"There are talks with officers in the armored corps to surrender," Saleh said.

Speaking to Ahram Online on condition of anonymity, sources said there were clashes with officers in the armored corps and more than 40 officers have been detained.

Saleh accused officers belong to the former regime of ousted president Omar Al-Bashir of masterminding the coup.

Traffic appeared to be flowing smoothly in central Khartoum, according to AFP, including around army headquarters, where in 2019 protesters staged a mass sit-in that eventually led to Al-Bashir's ouster in a palace coup.

Security forces did, however, close the main bridge across the Nile connecting Khartoum to its twin city Omdurman.

According to Salah, the attempted coup started in the military bases of Wadi Saidna north of Omdurman, which is across the capital Khartum on the other side of the White Nile.

Sudan is being ruled under a power-sharing deal between the military and civilians following the overthrow of president Al-Bashir in April 2019.

Transitional authorities have said that they had previously foiled or detected coup attempts linked to factions loyal to Al-Bashir.
