Egypt's Shura Council makes surprising series of changes to key national newspaper posts

In an unexpected move, Egypt's Shura Council appointed Mohamed Barakat, who was Al-Akhbar's chief editor, as the newspaper's board chairman, replacing him with Yasser Rizk, formerly chief editor of Radio and TV magazine.

The council, in its capacity as the owner of the national press, also replaced Osama Ghazali Harb, chief editor of Siyassa Dawlia, with Mohamed Abdel-Salam, who held the post of advisor to Al-Ahram's board chairman.

Hisham Murad was also announced as Al-Ahram Hebdo's chief editor, a position that has been vacant since Mohamed Salmawy retired last year.
