Life expectancy in Egypt rose to 74.3 years in 2021: CAPMAS

Life expectancy in Egypt rose from 73.9 years in 2019 to 74.3 years in 2021 (73.4 years for male and 75.9 for female), according to official data by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

In a statement released on Thursday, CAPMAS said that data showed that the number of elderly people (60 years and over) in Egypt reached 6.8 million, representing 6.7% of the total population. This percentage is expected to rise to 17.9% in 2052, it added.

Marking the International Day of Older Persons, CAPMAS pointed out that the number of elderly men hit 3.6 million, or 6.9% of the total male population, while the number of elderly women stood at 3.2 million, or 6.4% of the total female population.

The death rate among elderly men reached 61.8% of the total male deaths in 2020, while the fatality rate among elderly women accounted for 71.1% of the total female deaths, CAPMAS added.

The official statistics agency noted that the number of nursing homes offering services to 2,944 elderly people reached 154 in 2020.
