Egypt's Zamalek produced a spirited display but could not keep pace with mighty Barcelona in the second half as the defending champions secured a 36-32 victory in the Super Globe quarter-final in Saudi capital Riyadh on Wednesday.

Zamalek made a bright start, racing to a 5-0 lead in the early stages, thanks to some impressive displays from Yehia El Deraa and Hassan Kaddah plus some fine stops from keeper Karim Hendawi.

Barcelona needed eight minutes to score their first goal but they then stepped up a gear, equalising for the first time on 25 minutes when they levelled the score at 14-14.

They immediately led afterwards through Angel Fernandez Perez and finished the first half with an 18-17 advantage.

Zamalek were outplayed in the second half, with Barcelona widening the gap and taking full advantage of an error-strewn performance from the White Knights.

The Cairo giants improved in the latter stages but it was too little, too late as record five-time Super Globe winners Barcelona advanced to the last four.

Zamalek's defeat means they can't match their 2010 third-place finish, which marked their best Super Globe result to date. They finished fifth in their previous appearance in the 2019 edition.
