World number 2 Gohar needed 74 minutes to beat Hania El-Hammamy of Egypt 3-1 (9-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-3) to claim the tournament’s title for the second time in row.
“I can’t really believe it, but it seems like I have to always be down a set in the final of the US Open,” Gohar said afterwards.
“Last year I was down to the match point, this year — thankfully — I was only 1-0 and 9-4 down. I just wanted to stick around most of the time, and I’m just glad with the way I dealt with it. I felt I was the most experienced today, so that made a huge difference.”
“I’ve been in these situations before against top players… I think what made the difference is that I just wanted to stick to my game plan and adapt a little bit,” she added.
Meanwhile, World number 8 Asal needed 91 minutes to beat world number 4 Momen 3-2 (5-11, 5-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-3), winning the US tournament’s title for the first time to become the youngest player to ever claim the title.
“I can’t believe it,” 20-year-old Asal said after his sixth PSA title.
“I have all the respect for Tarek, he was 2-0 up, and I think it was a great battle today. I’ve been having so many 3-2s in the last couple of days and I cannot believe it until now,” he added.
“I was not sure whether I would participate in the tournament or not, but I managed to win the title,” the Egyptian squash player concluded.
