South Africa, Ghana continue World Cup qualifying race with vital wins

South Africa and Ghana continued their Group G battle in the World Cup qualifiers after recording vital wins over Ethiopia and Zimbabwe respectively on Saturday.

In the day's early kick-off, South Africa scored two late goals to down Ethiopia 3-1 away.

Teboho Mokoena put the Bafana Bafana ahead on the stroke of halftime, only for Getaneh Kebede to bring Ethiopia level seven minutes past the hour mark.

Mothobi Mvala restored the visitors' advantage on 71 minutes and substitute Evidence Makgopa ensured the victory in stoppage time.

Ghana also defeated Zimbabwe 3-1 to stay on the coat-tails of South Africa.

Mohammed Kudus gave Ghana the lead as early as the fifth minute but Zimbabwe's Knowledge Musona equalised in the 49th minute.

Thomas put Ghana in front again on 66 minutes and Andre Ayew added the third with three minutes remaining.

South Africa top the group with seven points after three matches, only one ahead of Ghana. Ethiopia are third on three points, followed by Zimbabwe on a solitary point.
