Cairo Jazz Festival to launch 2021 edition this month

Jazz bands and musicians from across the world will meet for the 2021 edition of the Cairo Jazz Festival at different venues in the American University in Cairo’s Greek Compass in Tahrir between 28 October and 4 November.

Among the arsenal of bands and musicians are Noha Fekry Quartet (Egypt), ICX Jazz Ensemble (USA), Djaima (Bulgaria/France/Egypt), Starke & Gorter (Germany), El Dor El Awal (Egypt), Room 251 (Egypt), Bahaa El Dahaby Qtet (Egypt), Dock In Absolute (Luxembourg), Samer George Qtet ft. Doaa El Sebai (Egypt), Mads Matthias Quartet (Denmark), KruidKoek (The Netherlands), Ayman Fanous & Frances-Marie Uitti (USA), Tarek Raouf Ensemble (Egypt), Mohamed Abo Zekry sextet (Egypt), Christoph Stiefel Inner language Trio (Switzerland), Edi Nulz (Austria), Viktor Toth Tercet (Hungary), Nuno Campos Quartet (Portugal), Agnes Gosling Quartet (NL/EG), OTAAK Band (USA/Egypt), Soul Trains (Egypt), The All-Star Blues Experience (Sudan/Egypt/Lebanon).

A number of workshops will also be held, including ICX Jazz Ensemble (USA), free improvisation by Ayman Fanous & Frances-Marie Uitti (USA) and blues workshop and jam – Tariq El Hawy (Sudan) as well a master class by Agnes Gosling (Netherlands).

The Jazz Talks programme will include lectures on jazz diplomacy by James Ketterer and jazz appreciation by Mark Campbell.

For the fifth year in a row, the festival will host Band Makers’ Jazzinino Programme "where kids get a chance to perform in public or participate in open-mic jam sessions and workshops."

The festival will also host film screenings for In His Own Sweet Way and Queens of Jazz.

Founded by Egyptian musician Amro Salah in 2009 to promote jazz music in Egypt, the festival has hosted prestigious artists from across the globe throughout the years, including Gilberto Gil, Ziad Rahbani, Fathy Salama, Carles Benavent, Kazumi Watanabe and Han Bennink.

This year's Cairo Jazz Festival is organised by Agwa for Events Organising, and is funded by the European Union, the US Embassy in Cairo and supported by the Ministry of Culture as well as other international cultural entities.
