The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has denied cancelling the Egypt Cup and insisted the tournament will go ahead as scheduled on 24 July, EFA spokesman Azmy Megahed said Wednesday.
Under the helm of caretaker president Anwar Saleh, the EFA reportedly cancelled the tournament due to the Port Said disaster and time constraints, but this has now been denied.
"We have informed all clubs that the tournament will start on 24 July," Megahed was quoted as saying by Ahram Sport.
"Recent reports about the tournament's cancellation are just rumours," he added.
All Egyptian football competitions have been suspended since 1 February when over 70 people died and hundreds were injured at a match between Ahly and Masry at the Port Said Stadium.
African Champions League matches have been held behind closed doors since the tragedy.
The EFA interim board hopes to launch the new Egyptian Premier league on its scheduled date of 24 August.
