Arts festival in Doha aims to support Syrian artists and victims of the Assad regime

A week-long cultural festival in solidarity with the Syrian revolution kicked off in Doha yesterday.

More than 100 Syrian artists will be participating, as well as several Arab artists including the Egyptian actor Nour El-Sherif, actress Fardous Abdel-Hamid, directors Khaled Youssef and Mohamed Fadel, singer Aly El-Haggar and the poet Ahmed Foad Negm.

The festival will hold exhibitions, concerts, theatrical performances, film screenings and poetry readings.

The cartoonist Ali Ferzat, who was beaten up by masked gunmen of the Syrian Shabiha on 25 August 2011, will be holding a solo exhibition that includes 75 of his cartoons. An exhibition of paintings by Syrian children will also be held.

The festival is also organising a charity market, with revenues going to the Syrian people and the victims of the Assad regime.
