A state of emergency was announced in Sudan earlier today as protesters took to the streets of Khartoum on the heels of the dissolution of the country's ruling Sovereign Council and the government led by Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok over political differences.

Egypt said that it is "closely" following the latest developments in Sudan and called for dealing with the current challenges in a way that ensures the country’s safety.

The statement added that the security and stability of Sudan is part and parcel of that of Egypt and the region.

In a televised address, the head of Sudan’s ruling council Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan said that "quarrels among political factions prompted the military to intervene."

Al-Burhan said that a new technocratic government would lead Sudan until the elections set for July 2023.
