Egypt coronavirus death toll on Wednesday nears May numbers

Egypt reported 53 coronavirus deaths on Wednesday, nearing the 54 number of fatalities recorded on 27 May,

This brings the total number of deaths from the virus since the start of the pandemic to 18,428.

In a statement, the health ministry said it registered 907 new coronavirus cases on the same day, bringing the total infection tally officially to 327,286 since the outbreak began in February 2020. 

It is also the highest number of infected cases recorded in a single day since 3 June 2021. 

The statement added that 721 patients have been discharged after recovering from the virus, bringing the total number of recoveries to 276,358. 

Earlier Wednesday, Chinese ambassador to Cairo Liao Liqiang said in an online press conference that two million Chinese coronavirus vaccine doses would arrive in Egypt "very soon,"

Along with various other vaccines, Egypt is using China's Sinopharm and Sinovac vaccines in its mass-vaccination campaign. 

Egypt has managed to administer around 25 million doses of vaccine until 23 October, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). The government has set a goal of vaccinating 40 million people by the end of 2021.
