Born on 9 September 1958, the acclaimed playwright had been a popular theatre professor at the American University in Cairo for over three decades. He had acquired his PhD in dramatic art from the University of California in the 1980s before returning to inspire generations of students.

El-Lozy conducted a number of theatre workshops and directed many Arabic plays, including by Tawfik El-Hakim and Saad El-Din Wahba, as well as Ibsen’s Ghosts, and Jean Anouilh’s Traveller without Luggage.

Among his prominent writings is the trilogy We That are Young. He also translated works by El-Hakim and Numan Ashour.

The father of star actress Yousra El-Lozy appeared in a few films, such as Fares El-Madina (City Knight), directed by Mohamed Khan and starring Mahmoud Hemeida, in 1989.

El-Lozy’s filmography also includes Youssef Chahine’s Alexandria-New York (2004), Osama Fawzy’s Bel-Alwan El-Tabeiya (2009), Microphone (2011), Ahmed Abdullah’s Heliopolis (2021), and Mohamed Saqr’s Ras El-Sana (2021).

He also appeared in many TV series, such as Khas Giddaan (2009), El-Gamaa (2010), Haret El-Yahood (2015), and El-Gamaa 2 (2017).
