At least 32 people, including 28 military police officers, were killed in an attack carried out by an unidentified group of armed men on a gendarmerie post in Inata, northern Burkina Faso, according to Reuters.
In the wake of the attack — the deadliest witnessed by the country’s troops in years — President Roch Kabore announced a three-day period of national mourning.
In a statement on Monday, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs offered its sincere condolences to the government and people of Burkina Faso and the families of the victims.
The statement also expressed Egypt’s full solidarity with Burkina Faso in facing terrorism in all its forms.
Another group of armed men also attempted a second attack in northern Burkina Faso on Sunday but were successfully repelled by troops.
Numerous attacks have been launched by militants linked to ISIS and Al-Qaeda in Burkina Faso over the past few years.
The militants’ insurgency across Sahel region in West Africa has killed thousands and displaced millions so far.
Earlier this month, Egypt opened the Sahel and Sahara Counter-terrorism Centre in Cairo to coordinate the efforts of the 20 states of the Community of Sahel-Saharan [CEN-SAD] states to confront terrorism.
