A fluke goal from Mohamed Amine Tougai put Algeria ahead in the first half but Egypt came on with all guns blazing after the break, with Amr El-Sulaya equalising from the spot on the hour mark.
Both sides were equal on seven points and they were also tied on a plus-six goal difference and on goals scored, leaving fair play to determine Egypt as the group leaders.
"We had that target [finishing as leaders] on our minds from the very beginning," Ahly's towering goalie El-Shennawi told beIN Sports in a pitch-side interview following the game.
"You can see the team spirit; It's getting better every game. We didn't win but we produced a very good display."
Egypt set up a quarter-final meeting with Jordan on Saturday.
"More difficult tests lie ahead. Jordan re a big team and we highly respect them, but we are fully focused on maintaining our run," he added.
