Defects of the 2015 agreement should be fixed, Abul Gheit said, noting that Tehran had been allowed to enhance its unacceptable policies and to interfere in domestic affairs of Arab countries.

Abul Gheit was speaking during a meeting with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi, currently visiting here, Thursday.

Abul Gheit voiced support for the role played by the IAEA to boost the peaceful use of nuclear energy, a well-informed source with the AL General Secretariat said.

The IAEA is a key player where firm and impartial implementation of the comprehensive guarantees are concerned, the AL chief was quoted as having stressed.

He pointed to a 2009 IAEA resolution that urged Israel to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), but voiced concern that Israeli nuclear facilities remained unsupervised by the agency, the source said. Abul Gheit also stressed that this represents a threat to regional peace and security, the source added.
