Asmaa Mahfouz was found innocent Tuesday by Ain Shams Apellant Court after she received a one year sentence and two thousand pounds fine in May. The activist and former member of the April 6 Youth Movement faced charges of assault for hitting a citizen Abdel Aziz Fahmy who is a general manager of Youth and Sports Directorate, Gharbiya Governorate.
Mahfouz who denied all charges and even having met Fahmy had already paid the fine, and appealed the verdict.
Meanwhile Mahfouz has been on hunger strike for six days, and participating in a sit-in in front of the People Assembly in downtown calling for the application of the Disenfranchisement law which would mean that Mubarak-era figure Ahmed Shafiq be excluded from the presidential race. The High Constitutional Court will hear the appeal regarding both the Political Disenfranchisement Law and Parliamentary Elections Law on14 June.
Mahfouz shot to fame when she made a video on the eve of the January 25 Revolution that went viral calling on Egyptians to take to the streets.
