Already missing nine players to international duty, the Red Devils lost nine more to injuries and positive COVID-19 tests.

Coach Pitso Mosimane had to include 15 players from the youth ranks in his squad.

Gouna capitalised on their experience and their opponent’s absent players to dominate possession of the ball during the game, but could not break through the defence marshalled by Mohamed Hani.

Ahly’s youngsters played well, especially keeper Mostafa Shobeir and Ziyad Akl.

On the other hand, Hossam Hassan, who was signed over the summer, failed to make an impact, as did Salah Mohsen, who had just returned from injury.

Ashly will face Ismaily on Monday in the second matchday.
