The three award nominations are Best Foreign Film, Best Directing, and Best Actress for Hiam Abbass. This is the latest demonstration of the film’s international success, where it was previously selected as Palestine's official submission for the Foreign Language Film category at the Oscars 2021.
Recently, Gaza Mon Amour opened the Amman International Film Festival and nabbed the Critics’ Choice Award at the Fribourg International Film Festival in Switzerland. The film was Palestine's official submission to the Oscars, and it received the Best Actress award and Best Feature Film at the Critics Awards for Arab Films, an initiative organised by the Arab Cinema Centre.
The film also won multiple international awards, including the Best Actor Prize for Salim Daw at the Malmo Arab Film Festival in Sweden, the NETPAC award at the Toronto International Film Festival, the Best Film award and Special Mention at the Cairo International Film Festival, the Best Actor award at the Antalya Film Festival and the Best Film and Best Script awards at the Valladolid International Film Festival.
It is also worth mentioning that Gaza Mon Amour started its successful commercial tour across the Arab world at Zawya Cinema in Egypt, where it had a two-month screening, and it had a three-week screening at Cinema Akil in the UAE, in addition to various screenings in Morocco and Mauritania, which kicked off theatres in November last year.
Gaza Mon Amour is about 60-year-old fisherman Issa’s (Salim Daw) attempts to declare his secret love to dressmaker Siham (Hiam Abbass), before he discovers an ancient statue of Apollo in his fishing net, which eventually causes trouble with the local authorities. Gaza Mon Amour also stars Maisa Abdelhadi, Georges Iskandar, Haitham Al-Omari, and Manal Awad.
