After reaching the last 16 of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt national team coach Carlos Queiroz promised to concentrate on “finishing exercises” as he believes the Pharaohs just need to score more goals.

The Pharaohs opened their AFCON campaign by losing 0-1 to Nigeria before beating their Group D opponents Guinea Bissau and Sudan 1-0 in each game respectively to book a place in the African Nations Cup last 16.

"Look I promise you starting from tomorrow they are going to be doing finishing exercises from the morning until the afternoon," Queiroz quipped to BBC Sport Africa after their 1-0 win over Sudan on Wednesday.

"Despite all the pressure they came back. They play strong, they play good football,” the Portuguese coach added.

"They just need to score more goals. To only play good football is not enough – we need to build up more goals and with that be more relaxed in the game."

The 68-year-old coach Queiroz was satisfied with Egypt's display in Wednesday's 1-0 win over Sudan despite their wastefulness, saying the primary target was achieved as the Pharaohs reached the African Nations Cup last 16.

"We complicate our lives because in a game like this the profile of the game is 'kick the ball forward, kick the ball forward'," Queiroz explained.

"We always have intention to score and it only takes one small mistake, one rebound, and something can happen. If we score three goals, as we should have in the first half, at least then the game was finished."

"It is (finishing) not a weakness. It's very good we have so many chances," he said.

Egypt are scheduled to face Group E leaders Cote d’Ivoire in a knockout game in the last 16 on Wednesday.
