Egypt to see more cold weather and rainfall this week

Egypt will continue to see nippy weather in the day and extremely colder conditions at night in the coming week, Egypt Meteorological Authority (EMA) forecast, warning of heavy fog on highways from 4am to 8am.

In a statement on Friday, the EMA said morning fogs are expected to hover throughout the week over roads leading to and from Greater Cairo, Lower Egypt, northern coasts, the Suez Canal cities, and middle and northern Sinai.

A 30 percent chance of light to medium rainfall as well as active wind are expected in several areas nationwide, including Greater Cairo and the North Coast.

Greater Cairo and Lower Egypt will see highs ranging from 15 to 19 degrees Celsius and lows ranging between eight to nine degrees from Saturday till Thursday.

Northern Upper Egypt will see highs of 16 to 19 degrees and lows of six degrees, while southern Upper Egypt will witness highs of 19 to 24 degrees and lows of eight degrees.

Additionally, the North Coast will see highs of 15-17 degrees and lows of 10 till, while South Sinai will witness highs of 19-21 and lows of 13 degrees.

Egypt saw lower highs and also lower lows over the past four days, with several parts of the country seeing rainfall on Wednesday, which the EMA described as this winter’s “coldest day.”

In recent days, there has been a sharp drop in temperatures nationwide and a disturbance in navigation in the Mediterranean Sea.

Videos on social media showed heavy rainfall and snowfall in the northwestern governorate of Matrouh.

Many governorates have declared a state of emergency to deal with the wave of bad weather starting Wednesday, deploying vacuum trucks on major roads and tunnels to remove rainwater and clear sewage systems.​
