Egypt won the last of their record seven Nations Cup titles in 2010. They lost to Cameroon in the final in 2017 before bowing out at the last 16 on home soil two years later after an embarrassing show against South Africa.

They proved far more solid under Carlos Queiroz this year, overcoming several of the continent's heavyweights en route to their record 10th appearance in the final.

Abou Gabal blocked two penalties in the shootout as Egypt set up a mouthwatering clash against Senegal in the final.

"We did our best during this game and we were determined to win in its regular time, but we managed to win on penalties," Abou-Gabal told beIN Sports after the game.

"We succeeded in overcoming very tough opponents like Cote d'Ivoire, Morocco and Cameroon in the previous games. This shows that Egypt is back."

Abou Gabal said he was also grateful to Egypt's medical staff for preparing him for the semi-final.

The 31-year-old, who replaced Egypt's first-choice keeper Mohamed El-Shennawi in the round of 16 win over Cote d'Ivoire, picked up a groin muscle injury in the quarters against Morocco and was thus doubtful for the semi final.

"I thank the medical staff for their efforts with me. They made a heroic job during the past three days," he said.
