The record seven-time African champions lost 4-2 on penalties to the Senegalese team following a 0-0 draw, missing out on a record-extending eighth crown.

“I only have a couple of humble words to share with you from the bottom of my heart. I feel proud of all of you and thank you so much for everything you did for the team,” the Portuguese tactician said via twitter early on Monday.

“You deserve to go home and be regarded as players that wrote together one heroic page in Egypt’s football history. You have my gratitude.”

Egypt will still have a chance to make amends when they clash with Senegal in a decisive two-legged World Cup qualifying playoff next month for a place in the World Cup that will be held in Qatar.
