Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki sent a message of congratulations to president-elect Mohamed Morsi and the Egyptian nation on Monday, calling for further cooperation between the two countries to achieve the aspirations of the peoples of Egypt and Tunisia.

"I ask God Almighty to guide your steps, to fulfil the historical challenges and goals of the glorious revolution of January 25," Marzouki said in his letter.

Marzouki was jailed under ousted Tunisian president Ben Ali in 1994, being released later to live in exile for most of Ben Ali's rein.

He is a doctor, human rights activist and head of Congress For The Republic Party, the second largest party in the Constituent Assembly following the Islamist Ennahda. Tunisia's Constituent Assembly elected Marzouki president in December 2011, a month and a half after the legislative elections.
